Addington Takes Lead In League Table

Addington took a one-point lead in the minor premiership when it beat a depleted Papanui team decisively in the fourth round of the Rugby league club championship at the Show grounds on Saturday.

Papanui, Hornby and Linwood are one point behind Addington, with Marist-Western Suburbs another point behind.

The favoured teams gave their supporters many anxious moments before victory was achieved. Hornby trailed Kaiapoi until 11 minutes into the second half when P. J. Tongue scored to draw the teams level; six minutes later T. Williams crossed and Hornby never looked back. Papanui was unfortunate to meet Addington without its three Kiwi trialists, all of whom made the World Cup team, and was not able to show the back-line penetration that had kept it unbeaten before this round. Another team below strength. Eastern Suburbs, just succeeded in holding off Sydenham, which continued to play its unregistered players, R. Scoringe and N. Mattison, and would probably have forfeited the game had it finished ahead. The draw between Marist-Western Suburbs and Linwood was a fair indication of a game of fluctuating fortunes. Results: — Addington 22, Papanui 12. Linwood 21, Marist-Western Suburbs 21. Hornby 28, Kaiapoi 9. Eastern Suburbs 24, Sydenham 21. Championship points:—

First Defeat ADDINGTON 33: R. L. Lanause two, N, Dewes, J. L. White tries: G. Teaho flve goals. PAPANUI 12: K. Graske two tries; C. R. Schwass three goals Although Papanui trailed by only three pointe at half-time there was seldom any doubt as to the likely winner. Ths Addington backs were abla to use their possession to bettor advantage, and the strong Addington defence faltered only twice, the second occasion near the end of the game when the result was Inevitable. The Addington loose forward, White, won the "player of the week” award for his fine cover defence and skilful mounting of attacks. B L. Gillman was a solid tight forward and, although he made fewer long runs than in some previous matches, A. F. McNaughtan again moved strongly from the rucks. In the back-line Lanause again showed an amazing sidestep to beat the Papanui coverdefence and score twice. Dewos and D. McCosh were difficult to contain from set play. Apart from one or two runs by J M. Tokl and the fine finishing off of moves by the other wing, Graske. the Papanui backs had little chance to penetrate a defence that ran from the rucks to smother any back moves. The loose forward, R. Walker, gave the incentive for Papanui’s first try when he ran from a scrum to create an overlap. Papanul's cause was not assisted by the fine goal-kicking of G. Teaho, who failed with only one of bls six attempts for Addington. The referee was Mr T. C. Houston. Improved Side ■ASTMH SUBURBS 26: P. Tai* mil two, D. Parker, D. J. Carroll tries; L. Tehuia five goals, field goal. SYDENHAM 21: J. Wlnika, R Andrews, R. Scoringe, M. J. Te Hau, B. S. Tatnall tries;

Te Hau three goals. Without G. R. Cookelay and R. H. Turton, two at its most Incisive player*, Eastern Suburbs did not impress to the sama extent aa in its previous matches against th* mor* highly-rated teams. Sydenham continued to improv* and actually scored five tries to Eastern’s four, the goal-kicking of Tchula being th* decisive factor. W, E. Butterfield gave Sydenham an even share at possession from the scrum*, and the back*, particularly Scoringe, R. Ralstrlck and Andrews, showed their appreciation at the possession. Andrews’s try followed a 70-yard move when he beat two players to out-pace the defence from his own side of halfway. In the absence of B. T. Barron, R. W. Mcßeath led his forwards well and received fine support from P. Tait, who had moved from wing to prop. Parker and Carroll were the most impressive Eastern backs, and Talnul and w. Morrison ran strongly in the pack. Referee: Mr P. Yaxley. Even Tussle LINWOOD 31: W. Taylor, L. Bone. J. Watts tries; G. J. Rosanowski five goats; J. Hales field goal.

MARIST-WESTCRN SUBURBS 21: M. H. Mohl, W. A. Flavell, . L. P. J. Brown trie*; J. C. Hawthorne six goal*.

The two teams were level on four occasions during a very even match, in which either team could have achieved victory in the closing stages. With five minute* remaining and the score at 18-18, Hales kicked a fine field goal for Linwood; but an easy penalty to Hawthorne two minute* later restored the balance. The Marist forwards showed better cohesion when Mohl and Flavell constantly made ground from the ruck*. P. V. Smith, playing at loose forward, covered well a* Linwood gained a noticeable advantage in the scrums. W. D. Berk L. Brown, and the consistent D. F. McNaughton were the most impressive Marist backs, Brown scoring his try by beating Ms marker. R. Auld, close to the posts. Hawthorne

miseed only two at Ma eight goal-kicking chances. Taylor kept up hi* average of a try per game for Linwood “>d. with w. J. Godfrey, wa» the beet of the beck*. R. Hattendon wae safe at full-back, while J. A. Flanagan and Rosanowski Impressed in the pack. Referee: Mr J. Htlledon. Late Bid HORNBY 36: B. Jager three, R. A. Neiman two7>, j. Tongue, B. W. Langton, T. Williams triM; Williams two goal!. KAIAPOI »: J. NOleon try; J. 1. Bond two, M. Pullin goals. The final result could hardly be regarded a* a true Indication for it wa* not unil th* last quarter that Hornby wa* able to wrest the lead away from a more determined Kaiapoi team. However, when the break did come it wa* decisive, and Kaiapoi had no answer to the strong running of Wllliami, in the forwards, and the threequarters, Jager and Langton, over the dosing stages. Without R. O. Moffat, J. M. Bray and W. Woodgate, the Hornby backs took a long time to find their combination. In the first half Langton used long kicks to push Kaiapoi back. Kaiapoi’s try, after 22 minutes, followed a fine run by B. L. William*, who beat the defence completely to link with Nelson on the left wing. Referee: Mr K. Carter.
