China May Seek Role
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HONG KONG, May 10. Communist China, which has denounced the preliminary peace talks in Paris as “a scandal,” may demand a role in any Vietnam settlement, political analysts in Hong Kong believe. Peking has maintained almost complete silence since Hanoi announced willingness to hold discussions with the United States in Paris.
Observers say the indications are that the North Vietnamese President (Ho Chi Minh) decided to accept the United States offer without prior consultations with either Peking or Moscow, his two strongest allies in the Vietnam war.
The sources say it would he wrong to presume that China will ignore the Paris talks entirely, and that there is a possibility she may eventually want to sit in on any peace conference.
