Honoraria For Chairmen
Honoraria for chairmen of boards controlling several schools were advocated at the South Island secondary school boards’ conference. Mr A Sutherland (Waitaki) said this would cushion the costs of office, otherwise schools would get only the chairmen who could afford the time. Local bodies recognised this.
Mr J, G. Chewing* (Southland) said that as retiring chairman for four schools and two hostels, he believed an honorarium was justified. But Mr J. Petrie (Timaru) said: “Many make a hobby of publie service; it should not be made a career.” The conference supported the remit by a moderate majority.
