TROTTING Cardinal King Takes Final Yonkers Event

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright)

NEW YORK.

The former Canterbury pacer, Cardinal King, yesterday completed a clean sweep of the international pacing series at Yonkers Raceway when he finished with rare courage to wear down Frank T. Ace in the last few strides of the $50,000 National Championship Pace.

W. Myer, who has driven Cardinal King in all of his four winning appearances since he arrived in New York a few weeks ago, again handled the four-year-old son of First Lord and Information.

Frank T. Ace, one of the American representatives in the race, was driven by J. Cruise, and K. Robinson as usual drove the Australian horse, First Lee, which finished third. Cardigan Bay, a 12-year-old, finished fourth. He is the only other horse to have won all three races of the international series in the one year. He achieved the feat in 1966. Cardigan Bay was followed in by Honest Story, of the United States, and Timely Knight, of Canada, with two former New Zealand horses. Southern Song and Bob Again, further back. Cardinal King, a five-year-old in America, has more than doubled his landed cost in that country. His three wins at Yonkers Raceway have been worth $75,00, while an earlier win was worth $12,600. His landed cost was about SNZ4I,OOO. After Cardinal King had won the first two races of the series the final event was made a handicap race. Cardinal King was handicap-

ped on the outside of the eight-horse field, with his bracket-mate, Cardigan Bay, immediately inside him and the Australian horse, First Lee, at No. 6.

Cardigan Bay’s fourth placing did not earn him any stake and he remains $U543,429 short of becoming the first horse in the sport to earn SUSIm.
