DESERTED MOTHER
Help After Publicity
Publicity given this week has helped a deserted mother who was trying to raise her five children on $29.50 a week. The secretary of the Canterbury Organisation for the Unemployed (Mr G. M. Edmonds) in a letter to the editor of “The Press,” says:
“Your interest in this woman’s plight did, I feel, strengthen my negotiations with the M.E.D. which rescinded its previous decision to disconnect the power supply to this woman’s house for a more practical and understanding alternative.” “You prompted the Square Deal Club to grant the mother assistance, including an in-terest-free loan which enabled her to regain an electric sewing machine, a watch, and typewriter she had been compelled to pawn for a loan of $36 at almost 80 per cent interest," said Mr Edmonds.
“You were responsible for a sympathetic reader giving a generous quantity of fruit and vegetables. Through you, therefore, we would like to express our thanks to the M.E.D, the Square Deal Club, and the other donors, and to assure your readers that none of the aid or support given our organisation is deducted for administration charges,” said Mr Edmonds.
