TRANSPLANT SURGERY
N.Z. Surgeons Reluctant (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 6. People were asking why Greenlane Hospital did not attempt a heart transplant, the Auckland heart surgeon, Mr B. G. Barratt-Boyes, said, when addressing the Auckland Rotary Club today. “It is not that we are not technically able, but we feel the time has not yet come for all and sundry to embark on this operation," he said. “We should wait to see how those that have been done stand up over a longer term to the rejection mechanism. “We should remember, too, that even if the operation is a success the patient will remain an invalid for the rest of his life. He may be a semiinvalid but he won’t be a very active one.”
