Murchison Copper Lode ‘Promising’

(New Zealand Press Association) ' - WELLINGTON, May 6. The existence of a copper lode at the southern extremity of the Nelson mineral belt, in the area in which prospectors had now made promising finds, had been hinted at for years, the Director of the Geological Survey (Dr David Kear) said today.

The lode was found early this century but lost again before it could be properly prospected, Dr Kear said. Asked about the latest reports, Dr Kear said that in his more optimistic moments be had regarded the Murchison area as extremely promising. “But it would not be a good thing to expect too

much at this early stage,” he said. “The big part of the job remains determining the size of the deposits. “In this sort of country a survey of the type needed to find out definitely whether the deposits are worth developing has many difficulties.” Dr Kear said he believed it would be months before any conclusions would be reached.
