Vegetable And Fruit Prices

Following the trend of recent sales, most vegetables con' tinned to sell at higher prices when the produce markets opened in Christchurch yesterday. Tomatoes, selling at between 11c and 33c per lb, were much dearer than last week, when they sold at between 8c and 25c per lb. Vegetables sych as parsnips, potatoes, lettuces, leeks and celery were considerably dearer than last week. Lettuces sold about 50c a case more than last week and potatoes and parsnips were 25c and 10c a case dearer, respectively. Sprouts and spring onions were oversupplied and sold at considerably less than last week. Last week sprouts had sold at up to 16.40 a case, but this week fetched only 84.80 a case. The official price range supplied by the Christchurch Fruit and Vegetable Wholesalers’ Association is:— Marrows. —To 60c a sack. Silver Beet.—loc to 40c a case. Pumpkins,—To 81.20 a sack (red); to 83 a sack. Cabbages.—2oc to 60c a sack. Carrots.—soc to 81.20 a sack. Cauliflowers.—soc 'to 81.05 a case. Onions.—To 81.50 a bag. Parsnips.—4oc to 815 a case. Sprouts.—To 84.80 case. Potatoes.—To 81-75 a bag. Spring Onions.—To 90c a dozen bunches. Radishes.—To 60c a dozen bunches. Parsley.—sc to 10c a bunch. Lettuces. —81.55 to 82.60 a case. Leeks.—Bl to 81.50 a case. Celery.—To 60c a case (white); to 90c a case (Utah). Stringless Beans.—To 82.70 a case. Spinach.—To 81.55 a case. Cucumbers.—To 60c a case.
