Wheat Board Criticised
Amendments to the Wheat Board Act were many years overdue, said the chaiman of a sub-committee of the Canterbury regional council of the Social Credit Political League (Mr M. McConnell). The committee is investigating the application of the Wheat Board Act. Preliminary investigations indicated that South Island bakers and pastrycooks had just as legitimate a complaint about the quality of flour as central North Island bakers, Mr McConnell said.
“It appears that certain millers maintaining the production of high-quality flour are rather restricted under the quota system of the Act, and are compelled to work short time for two or three months after fulfilling their quotas,” he said. “This enables the Wheat Board to quit the quotas of flour for which there is not such a popular demand and the bakers just have to do the best they can with it," he said.
