N.Z. Music Finds A Publisher

Though a good deal of New Zealand-written music has gained recognition at home and abroad over the last 25 years, almost none of It has been published owing to lack of commercial opportunities. Now, through developments in printing methods, limited publication is being undertaken in response to a growing demand from libraries, universities and indivduals. The publisher is the Wai-te-ata Press, a non-profit making adjun-t to Victoria University, which already has a reputation for fine printing and editions of New Zealand poets. Its first series of Music Editions will be facsimile reproduction of manuscripts by composers, priced within the range of 60c for piano score to $1.20 for instrumental. Examples of the works projected are. for instance. Jenny McLeod’s “For Seven,” a chamber work using a new notation performed last year in Cologne and Paris, and her “Piano Piece, 1965.” More familiar will be Larry Pruden's “Dances of Brittany,” Ronald Tremain’s “Three Inventions for Piano,” and John Ritchie's “Kyrie and Gloria” for choir and string orchestra. Others will include works

by Douglas Lilburn, New Zealand's foremos': composer, and David Farquhar’s symphony. written in 1959 but still almost unknown.
