School Staff Next Year
As no teachers will come out of the Christchurch Teachers College at the end of this year, because of threeyear training, the Canterbury Education Board has already i begun surveys of its requirements.
The minimum requirement of first-year (out of college) teachers, formerly known as probationary assistants, would be 257, the secretary-manager (Mr W. P. Spencer) reported to the board. It appeared that about 30 of these could be found from the Canterbury quota of final-year students, leaving a shortage of 227, Mr Spencer said. It was anticipated that some more would be drawn from Otago, some from other areas, and that the remaining places would be filled with bonded teachers and married women returning to the service.
