Hospital Parking Proposals

The North Canterbury Hospital Board will be invited to talks with the Christchurch City Council about parking difficulties near Christchurch Hospital.

The council’s traffic committee reported last evening that the reserves committee was prepared to make some concession for parking under the trees of Hagley Park near the hospital, but not to the extent of large-scale parking in the park.

The traffic committee also considered that the hospital authorities should investigate the possibility of creating a parking area behind the nurses’ home for the use of their staff of about 1500 persons.

Revocation Of Road.—Dedication as a road over a diagonal strip of land running parallel to the Main Road between Mount Pleasant Road and the Brae will be revoked by the Christchurch City Council. The council’s intention is either to build pensioners’ cottages on it, offer

it for sale by public auction, or grant a lease for the purpose of public convenience or utility. The committee considers it an excellent site for pensioners’ cottages and believes the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act could be construed to allow them to be built. To make sure, a legal opinion is being sought.

Avenue Intersections.—Because some motorists use the right-hand lanes in Bealey Avenue to cross intersections, instead of just for right turns, the Christchurch City Council has decided to paint direction arrows in the right-hand lanes showing that drivers may turn right or drive straight ahead. Reward.—A reward of §2O will be offered by the Christchurch City Council to anyone supplying information leading to the conviction of any person known to have interfered with or mutilated any traffic sign or signal. An increase in that type of offence had been reported. Objection.—One objection has been received to the Christchurch City Council’s intention to close to through traffic the section of Cam-

bridge Terrace between Madras Street and Manchester Street.

Lights.—Traffic lights at the intersection of Moorhouse and Fitzgerald Avenues should be in use before the end of the month and those at the intersection of Fitzgerald and Bealey Avenues should be ready by the first week in May. according to a traffic committee report.

Parks Post—Mr N. W. Drain, the Christchurch City Council’s landscape architect, has been appointed to the position of assistant director of parks.

Roundabout.—The traffic island at the Papanui shopping centre will be beautified by the planting of low-growing shrubs at the request of the Papanui Central Business Association.
