BIRTHDAY PARADE

Change To Wigram

Public observance of Queen's Birthday will be at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram, this year, instead of in Cathedral Square. The Mayor (Sir George Manning) told the City Council last evening that representatives of the armed services had discussed the matter with him and had invited the city to join in a joint ceremony at Wigram at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 31. In the past the city ceremony has been in the Square on the next Monday. The Mayor said that the three services would be happy to co-operate in a combined service. The Army offered to sponsor a similar function at Burnham in 1969. He said there would be a fly-past at Wigram instead of the usual 21-gun salute. If it was wet, the ceremony could be held in a hangar. In reply to questions from councillors, the Mayor said the R.N.Z.A.F. was committed to the Friday this year but was prepared to review the day of observancy.
