Friesians Bring High Prices
Cattle from the highest producing Friesian herd in the country in 1966-67, the Pitcairns herd of Mr E. L. Adams, of Brookside, met a notable sale on the property. For 25 head, including males and females, the average price was nearly $503, and the top-priced bull at $llOO exceeded the record price paid at auction in the South Island of $lO5O. Buyers came to the sale from south of Dunedin to Whangarei and a number of
cattle were purchased for the North Island. The sale was held for the first time on the Pitcairns property. For 14 bulls ranging in price from $225 to $llOO, the average price received by Mr Adams was $4BO. The New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association, of Blenheim, bought' Pitcairns T. Indicator, born on September 20 last year, for R. C. Woolley and Son (Tuamarina) for $llOO. At the South Island Friesian sale :n Christchurch
last year a South Island record for a Friesian bull sold at auction was claimed for a nine-month-old bull from A. Dudy, of Wyndham, which brought $lO5O. Another of Mr Adams's bulls sold last week—Pitcairns P.I. Isar, born last August—realised $725 when it was purchased by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, of Whangarei, for E. Kunicicb and Son, Awapui. Northland Sales' of Mr Adams’s bulls were also made at $7OO to D. A. Stewart, of Barrys Bay, and to Dalgety and New Zealand Loan for the Almon Clement Herd, of Opunake. For 11 Pitcairns females ranging in price from $270 to $775 the average was in excess of $531. Top price of $775 for Pitcairns P. 1. Elite born in August, 1966, was paid by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, of Hamilton,
as agents, and $750 was paid by E. J. P. Bryant, of Outram, for Pitcairns T. Violet. The average for the 25 Pitcairns cattle sold was $502.60. The gross proceeds of the sale of these cattle was in excess of $12,500. Cattle from the welHtnown Welburn herd of E. C. Sunckell and Son, of Brookside, and the recently established Weldale herd of 1. E. Sunckell, were also sold at the same sale. Three Welburn females made from $2OO to $270 each and two .males $2OO each, while three Weldale females realised from $l6O to $2OO. The sale was conducted by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan and the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association of Canterbury in association with The Farmers’ Stud Stock Company, Ltd.
