POWER FAILS

Reason Not Known The reason for a fault between Roxburgh and Livingstone, which caused parts of Christchurch to be without power for about 10 minutes on Saturday afternoon, had not been discovered late yesterday. At 2.50 p.m. on Saturday a 220 kw line from Roxburgh tripped. Although power did not come on again at Livingstone it did so at Roxburgh which showed that whatever had caused the fault had been removed. Electricity Department staff yesterday were unable to find what had caused the trouble. Roxburgh was supplying 300 megawatts of electricity to the South Island system. To enable faster restoration of power to the northern part of the South Island than would have been possible otherwise, the supply to the North Island was swiftly reduced. Some areas of the city had their power restored by 2.55 p.m. It was restored in all other areas by 3.08 p.m. An Electricity Department spokesman said the fault could have been caused by something blowing on to the line.
