The Canterbury Football Association has failed in Its bld to hold the national Chatham Cup soccer final |n Christahureh—but only for lisa, u the president of the association (Mr T. C. GMtermeyer) hat his way. After Canterbury’s bld was bekten by eight votes to four, with five abstentions, at the N.Z.F.a council meeting in Wellington at the week-end. said Wellington was the traditional venue and likened it to "the Wembley of New Zealand. ’’ “I would like to see Canterbury receive other big games, however." he added, commenting on the likelihood of "glamour league finals” arising from the formation of three New Zealand regional league*. Mr Qottermsyer said yesterday that he emphasised the N.Z F.A.’s duty to promote soccer, and to promote it in all parts of the country. This, he told the council, eould be dona by allowing the Chatham Cup final to go to other centre* than W*lllngton.
"I was asked whether Canterbury could guarantee the anal getting support tn Christchurch. I told them, bluntly, that we would get better suppert than Wellington has done in the past. However. Roberts, of Canterbury, the Junior Football Association's delegate on the council, Mr C. J. Dempsey (Auckland), and Mr J. Graham (Wellington). Among the delegates who abstained wer* these of Otago and Southland.
