SURPRISE WIN

Lincoln College LINCOLN COLLEGE: B. UNIVERSITY A: 3. Lincoln College, one of the bottom teams last year, caused a major upset when it scored a good win at the expense of the strong University A combination on a slippery surface at Denton Park. Lincoln College, which fielded several new players, deserved its win. Apart from the first 20 minutes; when University attacked strongly with the wind at its back, the Lincoln fifteen displayed more finesse, both back and forward. However, undoubtedly the decisive factor in its win was the superior fitness of the pack. The Lincoln forwards were invariably first to the loose ball and they gave an object lesson to University in driving through and hunting the ball as a unit. The University pack lacked cohesion and several promising movements broke down through lack of support. It would be difficult to single out any one of the Lincoln pack. All members performed with credit. P. Duncan made several strong runs for University and G. Loveridge and J. N. Creighton gave their usual solid displays. The backs of both teams were prepared to play the passing game and this was to their credit, as conditions were not conducive to good back play. However, many good movements resulted and the combination and teamwork of the Lincoln backline bore results. L. Karatua, a new player from Hawke’s Bay, was outstanding at half-back and he and Goddard were an excellent combin- , ation. Goddard was the outstanding back. Everything he did was constructive and his tactical kicking gained much ground for his side. D. Moore scored first for Lincoln College in the corner after a clever little kick by Goddard. University swept back to the attack and from broken play Hamilton swooped on a loose ball and crossed the line unopposed. Papps missed the kick. With a minute to go the Lincoln backs swung into action again, Goddard kicked ahead, the ball was regained and passed quickly to R. Moore on the left wing, who raced across the line near the corner. S. Murray converted magnificently with the heavy ball. Referee: Mr G. E. Albertson.
