Sydenham Efficient
SYDENHAM 14: B. Wilson and G. Hay tries, A. J. Howard two penalties and a conversion. BELFAST 3: B. Odgers a penalty. Both Sydenham and Belfast attempted to play open football but conditions were against them, and as the ball grew sodden and the ground at Lancaster Park South was churned up the game became one of kick and chase. This type of play suited Belfast better than it did Sydenham but the greater ability of the Sydenham players more than outweighed the advantage. The heavier and more experienced Sydenham forwards were in control throughout and they were supported by a back-line which had few stars, but gave an impression of efficiency. Belfast’s efforts were, in comparison, sporadic and ill conceived and there was no indication that it would be any greater a force than in previous years. The Sydenham loose forward, R. Doell. was the outstanding player of the match. His covering and all round play were of a high standard. A. Dunlop and A. Howard were a solid inside back combination. For Belfast, the first five-eighths, J. Doyle, and A. Steele played well. Referee: Mr D. M. Hume
