Muddy Ground Causes Upsets In Rugby
Linwood, last year’s champion, was defeated by Suburbs in the opening round of the senior Rugby competition on Saturday.
Suburbs scored its winning points from a penalty a few minutes before time but it deserved its win in a match which produced some excellent Rugby.
The wet and muddy grounds caused many form reversals. University A was beaten by Lincoln College, Marist drew with Albion and MerivalePapanui drew with the strong New Brighton team. Shirley, which appears to be one of the strongest contenders for this year’s championship played well to beat High School Old Boys at Lancaster
Park. In his first appearance in Christchurch club Rugby, the All Black half-back, C. R. Laidlaw, gave a brilliant exhibition for Shirley. Results were:— Christchurch 8, University B 0. Sydenham 14, Belfast 3. Suburbs 12, Linwood 9. Shirley 11, Old Boys 3. Lincoln College 8, University A 3. Merivale-Papanui 3, New Brighton 3. Albion 6, Marist 6.
