Sharks Rip At Cow Carcase
Two Diamond Harbour residents yesterday watched with horror as three sharks, one at least 20ft, tore the carcase of a black and white cow apart as it floated in the harbour about 50 yards from the shore.
The sharks continued to attack the carcase as it floated into the shore and were still tearing pieces of flesh off it when the two men stopped watching. One of the men, Mr C. J. Barter, of Ranui Crescent, Diamond Harbour, said last evening that he was worried that someone would be attacked by the sharks. He first saw something threshing in the water just off the Diamond Harbour Point about 1.30 p.m., he said. He watched through his binocular as the three sharks savaged the carcase as it floated near Diamond Harbour beach. He called his neighbour, Mr W. H. Simpson, and
they watched the incident for two hours and a half. “The sharks went mad, threshing the water, ripping pieces of meat from the cow, then turning away and coming in again at a great speed,” Mr Barter said. “1 could see the sharks’ teeth as they ripped into the carcase. They followed it right into the shore and continued to attack it. They looked like grey nurse sharks or white pointers,” he said.
