Strengthening Of Banks By Mergers
The tendency for banks to amalgamate in Britain seemed to be part of a continuing trend towards larger financial units, said Mr R. A. Samuels, the secretary of the National Bank, in Christchurch yesterday.
Mr Samuels, who said he did not regard himself as an authority, said that amalgamation would help fo provide better facilities for overseas competition. He declined to comment on whether amalgamation among the five trading banks in New Zealand would be a good thing or a bad thing. Mr Samuels is in New Zealand for a month “purely for my education.” It is his first visit since his appointment as secretary of the bank in London. He last visited New Zealand 10 years ago. “There have been many changes since then and in this short visit I will try to bring myself up-to-date,” he said.
