Noted sportsman retires

Major W. H. Dyson, one of the New Zealand Army’s most prominent sportsmen, is to retire from the force on April 26 after 29 years service. Major Dyson, the present comandant of Linton, has been a New Zealand swimming champion and at one time held all the senior men’s breaststroke records, was a former national beltman champion in surf lifesaving, is a former captain of the New Zealand water

polo team and is now the Water Polo Board’s national coach and selector. In his university days he was the Australasian universities’ swimming champion and a universities swimming blue. He was Wellington freestyle champion over all distances from 100 yards to one mile. Swimming was not Major Dyson’s only sporting interest. He has represented Otago, Canterbury, Wellington and Waiouru, the Army and Combined Services at indoor basketball. He is today an active squash rackets and water polo player.
