POISONING WARNING
A warning to farmers on Banks Peninsula to be on their guard against ngaio poisoning was issued this week by a veterinary surgeon, who said he had had a report of a farmer having a number of steers affected. It is an aftermath of the recent storm.
The veterinary surgeon said that it seemed that there was no treble when the trees
were growing as the stock did not eat them, but when branches were broken down and wilted they did. There was no specific antidote to the poisoning and farmers should get stock out of paddocks where trees were broken down or clear up broken branches. They should also provide shade. Stock affected by the poisoning might be found dead. Symptoms included abdominal pain, dark yellow urine, jaundice, a sensitivity to sunlight similar to sunburn and there was sometimes diarrhoea with blood in it
