New Potato Variety

A new variety of potato was shown to growers at a field day at Lincoln this week. It is called Rima. It is a red-skinned floury potato, which has done well in parts of the North Island and grows well under irrigation, according to Mr C. M. Driver, who is in charge of potato breeding at the Crop Research Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. An area was being grown at Apiti and would be marketed in Auckland this year, he said. In a reference to changes in potato harvesting methods, Mr Driver said that varieties that would stand up to harvesting but which would also contribute to improved harvesting themselves were needed. Since they had started breeding, Mr Driver said, farming conditions had changed and yields per acre had risen by 50 per cent. The variety called Rua, which they had produced, now grew too big and they were now breeding varieties that produced smaller potatoes and they hoped to release these fairly soon.
