TO HONOUR BREEDER
A plan to establish a growth chamber at the Crop Research Division at Lincoln to facilitate potato breeding was explained to growers at a field day at Lincoln College this week by Mr T. Mundy, chairman of the New Zealand Potato Growers’ Federation. The chamber is to mark the contribution to the potato industry of Mr R. G. Robinson, of Christchurch, whose work for the industry over 40 yean stood out above all othen, said Mr Mundy. As the breeder of Ham Hardy, the country’s most popular potato, he had been responsible for grow-
era enjoying increased remuneration and consumers had also benefited. Mr Robinson was of the opinion that a great deal still remained to be done in potato breeding and in breeding for disease resistance, said Mr Mundy, and a growth chamber was the thing that Mr C. M. Driver, who is in charge of potato breeding at the Crop Research Division, most needed. The chamber costing $lO,OOO would be of considerable benefit to the industry, said Mr Mundy, who announced his intention of establishing a fund with this object in view.
