Big Barley Shipment
A 38,000-sack shipment of barley is being loaded at Lyttelton and Timaru into the m.v. Karetu for Melbourne. It will probably be the largest single shipment of grain to leave New Zealand. (The sale has been negotiated by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, of Christchurch. The barley will be used in Australia for processing. Mr J. C. Paterson, manager of the grain, seed and produce department of the firm, said yesterday that the sale had been made possible by the presence of an exportable surplus of grain in the province, a demand from Australia because of drought conditions there and also because of devaluation. The photograph shows the barley being loaded at Lyttelton yesterday.
