Identification Of Property
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 19. More than $2OOO in cash and travellers cheques washed ashore in baggage, wallets, handbags and clothing after the Wahine disaster is being held at the Central Police Station.
Owners of most of the money have been identified, a police spokesman said this morning. Only about $4OO is still outstanding.
The largest single sum retrieved from the sea is SHOO in cash and travellers cheques and its owner has been identified. It will be returned when the owner is traced. The money came ashore in about 50 different lots. Large quantities of baggage, clothing and handbags are also held at Central Police Station. They had been dried out and much of it has been identified. Other Claimants Police stations throughout New Zealand are in touch with owners and arranging for the return of property. Unidentified property, much of it clothing, is awaiting claimants. Police continued the search of Wellington’s coastline today for the body of one man presumed missing. He is John Alfred Cox, of Maida
Vale Road, Evans Bay, Wellington. The bodies of 50 victims have been recovered; and persons whose names appeared on the passenger list but not on survivor or victim lists have been accounted for.
