Madras Street, Phone 30-063. 3346 UNIVERSITY VACANCIES AUSTRALIA UNIVERSITY APPOINTMENTS UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES invites applications for appointment to the newly created position of PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS FACULTY OF MILITARY STUDIES APPLICATIONS will be welcomed in any field of mathematics but preferably in applied mathema tics. Following discussions with the Minister for the Army, the University of New South Wales has established a Faculty of Military Studies at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Canberra. The Faculty provides courses leading to the award by the University of the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in Military Studies (B.A. (Mil.)) and Bachelor of Science in Military Studies (B.Sc. (Mil.)). It is the intention of the University and the Department of the Army to develop the Faculty within 10 years to the stage of becoming a separate degreegranting authority. Appointments have already been made to the chairs of Physics, English, History and Engineering. The Professor of Physics. Sir Leslie Martin, C.8.E., F.R.S., F.A.A., is also Dean of the Faculty. A department of mathematics already exists in the College and will be expended to meet the needs of the new Faculty. Appointment will be to the staff of the University of New South Wales and normal academic conditions of employment will obtain on establishment of the Faculty as a separate degree-granting authority, however, the staff of the Faculty will become members of the new body. Salary will be $A12,000 per annum. Subject to the consent of the University Council, Professors may undertake a limited amount of higher consultative work. Prospective applicants are urged to write to the Appointments Office for supplementary information on the College's activities and for details of conditions of appointment, including superannuation, study leave and housing scheme. The University reserves the right to fill any chair by invitation.
