DIAMOND WEDDING

Sixty years ago today, Mr and Mrs G. V. Furby, of Gordon Avenue, Christchurch, were married at Holy Trinity Church, Avonside. They will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary at a family dinner party this evening and by entertaining friends and neighbours at home tomorrow afternoon. Mr and Mrs Furby spent most of their married life in Ashburton, where Mr Furby was an accountant and secretary until his retirement in 1949. Keenly interested in sport, he was secretary of the Mid-Canterbury Rugby Union for 22 years and secretary of the Ashburton County Cricket Association for about six years. For his services he was

made a life member of both organisations. He was also secretary of the Ashburton Boxing Association and secretary of the Ashburton High School board of governors. Mr Furby served for some years on the vestry of St Stephen's Church, Ashburton. After retirement, Mr and Mrs Furby lived at Sumner until 1956. Continuing his interest in cricket, Mr Furby umpired for the Sumner Cricket Club and held the offices of president, vice-president and patron of the club. Miss Jo Godby, of Gore, devoted her life to her husband and family of five. She is now 80. Mr and Mrs Furby now have 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. All their sons and daughters will be at Mr and Mrs Furby’s dinner party this evening. They are Messrs George Furby (Sydney), Edward Furby (Timaru) Benson Furby (Wellington). Mrs J. Mcllraith (Ashburton) and Miss Maragaret Furby (Christchurch with whom Mr and Mrs Furby now live. Another guest at the party will be Mrs A. Macbeth, of Christchurch, a sister of Mrs Furby and one of her bridesmaids 60 years ago.
