Competitions To Promote Wool

The focus is on wool at the Bishopdale Shopping Centre at present. Competitions are being held for the best-dressed women in wool, for fast knitting, and for making and modelling garments in wool. Spinning demonstrations and parades of hand-knitted garments are other features of the wool promotion. The first of two contests for the best-dressed woman in wool among shoppers at the centre was held yesterday, when the winner was Mrs R. V. Neale, of Vauxhall Street. “Miss New Zealand, 1967” (Miss Pamela McLeod) presented Mrs Neale with a pure wool cardigan, a set of makeup and an order for a free hair set from the Bishopdale Merchant’s Association. Mrs Neale was wearing a coral and beige tweed suit and a deep coral felt hat “I was surprised to be handed a certificate Inviting me to take part in the parade, but even more so when I was announced the winner,” Mrs Neale said. SEVEN PICKED Seven women were selected to appear on a ramp in the court at the shopping centre. They were judged by Mrs R. B. Johnston, a well-known fashion co-ordinator, assisted by Miss McLeod. The parade was watched by a large crowd of Friday shoppers and their children. A “jiffy knitting” contest was also judged yesterday. The results were: Bumside sub-branch of the Plunket Society 1; Bishopdale subbranch of the Plunket Societey 2; Bishopdale Plunket Mothers’ Club 3. This three-day contest was held in a shop window at the centre, with three women taking part at a time. Nine women’s organisations selected fast knitters to represent them in this competition. They were required to knit a long-sleeved woman’s jumper on outsize needles, using four strands of double-knitting wool. NEATNESS The time limit was four hours. Neatness in sewing up the garment and the tension

of knitting were taken into consideration, as well as speed. Prizes of $5O, $2O and $lO were awarded to the three place-getters and these amounts will go to their organisation's funds. During the afternoon a parade of hand-knitted garments was held and in the evening Miss Heather Ashford gave a demonstration of spinning.

Next Friday evening a "Make a Model in Wool” contest will be completed for by members of Country Girls’ Clubs. They will be judged on the standard of sewing, and suitability of style to the material and to the wearer. This will be followed by another competition for the best-dressed woman in wool.
