Lion Full-back Retires
(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. D. Rutherford, the former British Lion and England full-back, is retiring from Rugby. He broke his arm for the second time in two years while playing for the Barbarians aginst Newport this week. “This is definitely the end of my Rugby career,” he said yesterday. The doctor who treated Rutherford said that there was an obvious weakness in the arm, and Rutherford would be unwise to play again.
The 30-year-old Rutherford first broke his arm while playing against New Zea-
land for the British Lions team in 1966. A silver support plate was fitted, but the new break has cut right across it. Rutherford, who is a physical instruction master at Wycliffe College, near Gloucester, has played a great part in bringing the Gloucester club back to the fore in British Rugby this season. As well as being a superb full-back, he has brought his vast knowledge of the game into the club’s training tactics.
