Protest March Planned By Vietnam Committee
The Citizens’ Vietnam Action Committee at a meeting last evening agreed to arrange a demonstration march through Christchurch next Friday evening, the theme being “phoney peace talks,” the president of the committee (Mr K. Duffield) said after the meeting. The committee decided to support a call by the United States Mobilisation Committee to protest against the war in Vietnam, and an. American request for an international students’ strike. Mr Duffield said that the chairman of the Auckland committee (Mr L. Reid) had anncunced that his committee intended to organise a
massive demonstration in Auckland. Out of courtesy to the Christchurch City Council the committee had decided to apply for permission to hold a demonstration march next Friday, said Mr Duffield. Demonstrators would assemble in Victoria Square at 7.45 p.m., march through the city, and return to Victoria Square where a speaker would address the gathering. Mr Duffield said the committee was not satisfied about the sincerity of the proposed peace talks between America and North Vietnam. Such questions were being raised in other parts of the world and Christchurch citizens had the right to raise them also.
