Phone Strike Still On
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 19. The first nation-wide telephone strike in the United States for 21 years kept 200,000 workers from their jobs today while union and management officials tried to reach agreement on wages. The strike, which began yesterday afternoon, affects telephone operators, engineers and linemen of the Bell Telephone System. Called by the Communications Workers of America, the strike affects service to about 85 million telephone subscribers in the country. A union spokesman said last night: “We’re hopeful of settling just as soon as possible, but there is nothing to lead us to indicate we’re going to settle tonight or tomorrow.” Management and administrative staff in the 40 States affected manned switchboards and promised to give good service in spite of the strike.
