Bishop Vockler To Visit Christchurch
The Bishop in Polynesia (the Rt Rev. J. C. Vockler), who resigned as Bishop early in January, will be in Christchurch from May 4 to 6. He will visit New Zealand to attend the General Synod, beginning in Wellington on April 29.
On Saturday, May 4, it is hoped to arrange a tea to enable young people from several parishes to meet him. On the Sunday, at 9.30 a.m., he will preach at a service of Holy Communion at St Nicholas' Church, Barrington Street, and at 11 a.m. he will speak at a service of morning prayer at St John’s Church, Latimer Square. In the evening he will preach at evensong at the Christchurch Cathedral. The chairman of the Christchurch Polynesian Committee (the Rev. B. O. Richards) said yesterday it was hoped that on the Monday Bishop Vockler would be able to visit the Fendalton parish’s vouth conference -near Sheffield before leaving for Wellington. Bishop Vockler, who has been Bishop in Polynesia for six years, was consecrated Bishop (as assistant) in Adelaide on November 30, 1959, and was translated to PolyI nesia on March 21, 1962.
His resignation, which was received by the Archbishop of New Zealand (the Most Rev. N. A. Lesser), will become effective two weeks before the consecration or enthronement of his successor.
