MANAGER
Mr E. J. Butcher, the manager of the Addington branch, is the oldest employee of the company. He has been with Blackwell Motors since 1928. The company began in 1923. When he left school he began as a message boy in the spare parts division in the main garage at Durham Street, which was then the only garage. Then he was apprenticed as a motor mechanic and served his time with the company. He joined the Army during the Second World War and served
overseas in Egypt and Italy, with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. When he returned to New Zealand in 1946 he returned to Blackwell Motors, as a mechanic and two months later was made foreman of the head office workshop. In 1952, he was appointed service manager at the head office and was appointed manager of the Addington branch in 1963. Since then, he has directed the expansion and development of the branch. He was appointed director of the Riccarton Road Used Car yard this year.
