RACING Material For Exciting Great Autumn Handicap

The $4OOO Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton tomorrow has attracted a field capable of making this race, the last autumn event of the season with an inter-island flavour, something to remember.

It is a race that looks wide open, and victory for any one of four or five horses would make the day a great sporting success. Dalvui is assured of a hero’s welcome if he completes a rich double for the meeting for his Hawke’s Bay owner-breeder, Mr E. W. Syme. A win for Palisade would, or should, spark off just as much enthusiasm, because Riccarton patrons like to see successful veterans and Mr A. T. Ottrey’s 10-year-old is now nearing the end of a great career.

Southland has a strong fresh interest at the mooting through the presence in the field of Court Belle, already twice the winner of the race. A win by' any one of those horses would be immensely popular, but the list does not end there. Royal Master and Millie Small, the Riccarton pair! which filled the minor places behind Dalvui in the George Adams Handicap, and Point Duty, which finished fourth, put much interest into all pre-race conjecture, and. almost just as certain, will supply interest to the finish of the race itself. Dalvui, with 9st 41b, is up 91b on the weight he carried to a half-length victory over Royal Master in the George Adams Handicap. Bandon won under 9st 41b four years ago, and Dalvui is a horse of equally impressive physique for such a test. The state of the track—the firmer the better for him—is likely to have the final bearing on his chance. Court Belle won In 1965 with 7st 81b and last year with Bst 61b. This time she has Bst 11b, and she has come to Riccarton right in form after a strtngly-flnlshing second against the milers at Riverton on Tuesday. A relaxed approach by Point Duty to the early running would leave this Levin stayer with enough vitality to run every yard of a mile and a half with the best of them. He pulled his way to the front from the start in the George Adams Handicap and pacemaking made its inevitable demands on him in the final two furlongs. He will be ridden by J. R. Dowling, who has also been engaged for James Arthur, one of the top fancies for the Waltham Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Southern Hope If there is no deterioration in the track James Arthur is the South Island sprinter most likely to put the brilliant young Woodville gelding, Pasa Doble, to the test. Both Pasa Doble and James Arthur are three-year-olds.

iThe best of their elder* could be Glamis Lad, whose run for fifth in Pasa Doble'S Great Easter was not all that bad considering he had lost a good position about half way {through the race. The Greatest, a winner at a mile on Wednesday, and third in the Great Easter, is I also likely to be robust enough to come up with a third solid run .inside a week.
