LAND WON FROM THE SEA.—This aerial view of the centre of Nelson shows the huge reclamation area of Port Nelson. In this area—more than 100 acres of what was once sea bed—are sited many of Nelson’s light and heavy industries. At the tip of the reclamation are the new fish processing factories of Sea Products of New Zealand and Nelson Fisheries, and just to the right of the ship are the cool stores of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board. Just below them is an area filled with pine logs awaiting shipment to Japan. The Maitai River leads to the small boat harbour. Running diagonally to the right is Nelson’s main street, Trafalgar Street, leading to Trafalgar Park. On the bare area in the middle of the picture are croquet and tennis lawns, basketball courts, playing fields, a rubber bowling green, and squash courts.
