Price Index Up 11 Points This Year
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 18. The consumer price index rose 11 points in the first quarter of 1968, the Department of Statistics said today.
The index stands at 1115 points (on a base of 1965 equals 1000), compared with 1104 for the fourth quarter of 1967. The rise, the department said, amounted to a 1 per cent increase in the average level of retail prices. The department said major contributions to the increase came from the food group (31 points), the housing group (2i points), transportation (21 points), and miscellaneous <ll points). Sub-groups which contributed significantly to the index’s upward movement were fruits and vegetables (4.9 points), home ownership (2.1 points), and private transport (2.1 points). This was partly offset by a downward contribution of 2.6 points from the other food subgroup. I
The monthly all food index fell three points from February to March, mainly as a result of the seasonal drop in the price of fruit and vegetables.
