Heathcote Up After Heavy Rain

The Heathcote River again overflowed into Clarendon Terrace after heavy rain last evening, but no houses were affected, and at midnight the river appeared to be dropping.

Flooding was noticed by policemen and City Council traffic inspectors early in the evening, and at 9 p.m. five extra police patrols were sent to patrol the banks of the river from Waltham Park to the Estuary. Residents who could be in danger if the rain continued after midnight were warned by the police. Soldiers in two utility vehicles were sent into the area, and other soldiers at Addington with heavier equipment were ready to give assist ance. The soldiers and extra

police patrols were stood down shortly after 1 a.m. as the Heathcote River continued to drop. It was not expected they would be called on unless the heavy rain, which had stopped, began again. During the rain Drainage Board and City Council staffs cleared drains in many areas. Debris from last week’s storm had choked many of the drains and surface flooding occurred. Police patrols in the South Brighton and Sumner areas reported only the normal amount of surface water after heavy rain. In other areas surface water was reported at the foot of Mount Pleasant and in Mathesons Road, Linwood, and Eastern Terrace, Beckenham.
