EYE TESTS
New Regulation Criticised “Hastily adopted, unworkable and quite inadequate” was the way the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) described the legislation requiring compulsory eyesight tests for drivers over the age of 50 years when the subject was discussed by the Waimairi County Council last evening. The County Clerk (Mr J. Reid) said that so far there had been no difficulties but. with 1600 or more applicants affected by the renewal of licences in June, he felt some concern. The council authorised two members of the staff to help traffic inspectors with the testing. It decided that tests could not be carried out at the council’s town office, and to warn applicants there that, failing presentation of a cer tificate from a doctor or optician, tests would have to be made at the main office.
