Speed “Too High” In Yaldhurst Road

If the Transport Department will not favour the imposition of a 30 m.p.h. speed limit in Yaldhurst Road to replace the limited speed zone between Racecourse Road and Russley Road, the Waimairi County Council will ask the Paparua County Council to join it in a deputation to the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon).

The Russley School Committee, in a letter received bv the Waimairi Council last evening, said it was concerned at the speed of traffic in Yaldhurst Road. An adult had been blown from a bicycle by the wind of a passing car. A 30 m.p.h. limit was imperative. The traffic committee renorted that the Transport Department had again declined to agree to this, and in spite of another request from the council had adhered to its decision. The County Clerk (Mr J. Reid) said he was concerned that the department gave no reason for its decision. The council decided to tell the department of the latest letter from the school committee, and to ask f or reconsideration, as it was believed that an unwarranted danger to cyclists and pedestrians existed. It was also decided to ask Paparua to join an' approach to the Minister. Ridings.—A general adjustment would be made in three years, said the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich), commenting on minor changes in the boundaries of the Belfast, Harewood, Styx and Papanui ridings. The Englefield Road block has been transferred from Harewood to Belfast and Grimseys Road north of Prestons Road goes from Styx to Papanui. Tree Planting.—Crs J. D. Ashby and F. S. Blogg were asked to find out if lessees of the Wairakei Road Industrial sites were prepared to meet costs of tree-planting on the frontages. It was estimated that it would cost $316 to plant 72 trees on nine frontages. Deferred.—Extension of the tar-seal in Roydvale Avenue to reduce traffic hazards was deferred for consideration with the estimates, but the council agreed to paint white lines on the roadway to mark property entrances near the Russley Hotel. Expressway.—The line of the Northcote-New Brighton expressway between Hills

Road and Burwood Road was approved, the council being told that it had been revised to meet the Christchurch Golf Club’s requirements. New Centre.—-A $32,694 tender was accepted from Branston Construction, Ltd, to build the first stage of the Redwood Community Centre Eight tenders, the highest at $42,967, were received The council’s estimate was $39,310 Dog Control.—Dogs should not be allowed on county streets unless they were on a leash, said Mr Rich. The council asked for a report on how this could be achieved under the by-laws.
