“Threat To Europe”
Sir, —Correspondents trying to score against America certainly make wild passes. For posterity, Seth Newell has it that Hiroshima was to keep Russia out of the Pacific. How he happens to know is obscure, but before August, 1945, Russia was already into Manchuria en route for Korea, and the bomb did not deter Russia from pinching the Kuriles, as close to Japan as Wellington is to Picton. “Caractacus” refers to “us Europeans” resenting America in Europe. As neither the British Isles nor New Zealand are in Europe, he seems to be wearing the wrong jersey. However, as reported today, Britain, New Zealand butter or not, now aims to change the map of Europe to include herself. Both correspondents could be suffering from time-lag, “Caractacus" back perhaps with his namesake, Emperor Claudius’s prisoner, and Seth Newel) maybe forgetful that posterity regarding 1945 is already here. —Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. April 17, 1968.
