Civil Defence ‘Not Workable’
(New Zealand Press Association)
HAMILTON, April 17.
Civil defence legislation in New Zealand was not workable and it was about time it was overhauled with a view to providing a civil defence organisation applicable to New Zealand, the Mayor of Hamilton (Dr Denis Rogers) said today.
Dr Rogers said that both the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr Seath) and the Minister of Police (Mr Allen) should meet the executive of the Municipal Association on this matter. Dr Rogers said today that New Zealand’s civil defence legislation was born out of the threat of nuclear disaster
and based on similar English legislation. “1 firmly believe that the police are still the best trained and the best able to direct and take command of emergencies such as we have just had, and I hope that the Minister of Police is included in any review of the organisation,’’ he said.
