POPPY DAY TOMORROW

82,000 On Sale In City

About 450,000 poppies will be offered for sale in the annual Poppy Day appeal in the South Island tomorrow. All have been made in the last year in the homes of 15 Christchurch war veterans and war widows. A proportion of this total will also be for sale in the southern part of the North Island. The secretary of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association (Mr F. Barron) said yesterday that about 60 points in and around Christchurch will be manned by sellers tomorrow. He added that a few more volunteers would be welcomed. Last year 82,000 poppies were distributed in Christchurch and all but 10,000 of them were sold. This realised $9OOO. Mr Barron said that, given good weather, it was hoped to equal or to better this figure this year. Although only one standard type of poppy is produced for sales in New Zealand, the Christchurch team annually send 50 special poppies to England which are made into the wreath which is laid at the foot of the Cenotaph in Whitehall on Armistice Day.
