ADDINGTON MARKET Another Good Sale For Store Calves

Store calves again sold well at Addington market yester* day. In the early stages values for some pens were a little easier than last week’s rates, but with an increasing gallery of buyers, the market became fully firm on last week.

There was a mixed entry of adult cattle. Adult steers sold to $95, and 20-month-old steers to $Bl. Shorn Romney lambs met a good sale and values were fully firm, but some of the woolly lambs were 20c to 30c easier. Very few two-tooths and adult ewes were offered. The store sheep yarding was 4475, compared with 11,430 at the last sale. It consisted of 1535 ewe lambs, 2340 wether lambs, 30 two-tooth ewes, 550 adult ewes and 20 wethers. The store cattle yarding was 1860 head, consisting of 1550 calves and 310 adult cattle Store Sheep Store lambs made up most of the store sheep entry. The entry of a little more than 4000 head included a good line of shorn Romney wether lambs, and also a large line of highcountry halfbred wether lambs. There were also some pens of cows and heifers and several pens of 20-month-old steers. A line of adult steers from the West Coast sold from $B2 to $95, large Friesian steers sold from $7O to $75, and 20-month-old steers from $47 to $55. with one sale of forwardconditioned steers at $Bl. Hereford heifers were sold at $67, Friesians at $66, and Hereford cows at $56.

A fair gallery followed the sale, but because of recent wintry weather, there was a more cautious tone towards the sale of carry over lambs.

The feature of the sale was the entry of shorn Romney wether lambs, and the best of these sold from $5.10 to $5.50, with one sale at SS.SO. Good average sold from $4.70 to $5. There were sales of woolly Rom neys at $4 to $4 55, with others down to $3.40.

Sales of adult cattle included: —

Good average halfbred wether lambs sold from $4.35 to $4.60 with one sale at $4 90. and others from $3.40 to $3.80. Shorn Corriedale and halfbred lambs sold from $3.80 to $4.50. Very few Down cross lambs were offered, and there were sales at $3.80 to $4.60.

! Ewe lamb values showed little I change on recent rates. There I was a sale of Corriedales at $5.55, but most sales of finewoolled lambs ranged from $4.40 to $4.70, with smaller down to $3.40. Breeding Ewes With fewer than 600. the breeding ewe entry was the smallest of the season. There was only one pen of two-tooths These were Romneys, and realised $6.10. Tn the adult sheep section, a pen of early shorn mixed-age Romney ewes sold at $5.50, and another pen of similar ewes realised $5.30. A pen of mixed-aged mated Corriedales realised $4.05, and small lots of old ewes sold from $3.10 to $3.60/

Sales of ewes included: L. R. Wolfe (Cust), 102 mixed aged Romney ewes at $5.50, 68 at $5.30, and 28 two-tooth Romneys at $6.10.

Store Calves The store calf yarding, at 1550, was not large. A big gallery followed the sale for the first two hours, and over all it was again a very good one. The market opened strongly, but over the first race values were erratic with some sales below last week's rates. Once some of the large representative lines were reached, the sale was very strong, and from then it did not recede, even when the very small calves were offered. A feature of the entry was a line of 198 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross calves from Bullock Hill. Okuku. The steer calves sold from $54 to $66. to average just over $6O a head, and the heifers sold from $46.50 to $57 to average almost $5O a head.
