Quarantine Laws Praised

The New Zealand authorities should be commended for the quarantine laws and restrictions, which had helped to keep the country free of much of the disease experienced in other countries, Mr C. H. G. Irvine told thoroughbred breeders and owners in Christchurch this week.

Mr Irvine, a veterinary surgeon doing research work at Lincoln College, was the guest

speaker at a function arranged by the Canterbury-Marlborough-Westland branch of the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association. Goitre, its effects on performance, and the treatment of it were dealt with by Mr Irvine, who has done much research into thyroid function. In introducing Mr Irvine, Mr R. E. Adair, the president of the branch, referred to the successes of the New Zealand horses, Unpainted and General Command, in the big Easter double in Sydney. Mr Adair said that there was local interest in Unpainted's dam. Dogma, because that mare was by Dogger Bank, which stood at a Canterbury stud for several years.
