Aust. Mining Exports
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, April 17. Australia earned $98.4m more from its leading export of minerals and metals In 1967 than in the previous year.
This was shown in figures released by the Commonwealth Statistician (Mr K. M. Archer) of exports of 21 selected minerals and mineral products. Their export value increased from $308.2m in 1966 to $406.6m in 1967—a rise of 32 per cent. However, the spectacular increase was largely confined to three exports out of 21— iron ore (up $56.7m), coal (up $10.7m), and refined silver (up $6.7m). Exports of refined lead were down by $7.5m, refined zinc down by $7.3m and refined gold by $6.2m. The lower returns from exports of refined lead and zinc were because of a combination of lower tonnages being sent overseas as well as lower prices. The reduced returns from gold was caused by lower output.
