AUCKLAND.

Two Auckland athletes, A. Maguire and R. M. Maddaford. broke the New Zealand records for six miles and 10,000 metres, set by M. G. Halberg, last evening.

The six-mile time of 27min 22sec was improved by 10.8 sec and the 10,000 metres time of 28min 43sec by 17.7 sec. Maguire and Maddaford went past the six-mile point together to share the record time, but over the remaining 350 metres of the circuit, Maguire showed a surprising superiority of strength to finish 2.ssec ahead of Maddford. They covered six miles in 27min 11.2 sec and Maguire recorded 28min 25.35ec at 10,000 metres. Maddaford’s time for the longer distance was 28min 17.8 sec. The qualifying standards set by the International Olympic Committee are 28min for

six miles and 29min for 10,000 metres. When the first mile time of 4min 38sec was followed by a two-mile time of 9min lOsec, it was obvious that a record was possible. The three miles was reached in 13rain 44sec, when Ihe younger, Maddaford, who had had an easy trailing run to this stage, took over the lead from Maguire and forced the pace. When the bell sounded with one lap to go for the six miles, Maddaford whipped up the pace to a quite remarkable pitch, which eventually left him the weaker of the two over the final 350 meetres.
