SAIGON, April 17.

Viet Cong guerrillas shelled Thu Due Infantry Academy only seven miles from the centre of Saigon today.

About 50 Viet Cong had been killed in clashes within 30 miles of Saigon during the last 24 hours, military spokesmen reported today. Casualties were inflicted on the academy units, but a South Vietnamese spokesman did not give any details. Only seven miles north of Saigon yesterday South Vietnamese paratroopers clashed briefly with two Viet Cong units. Twenty-five paratroopers were wounded but Viet Cong casualties were not known. When local units took on two reinforced Viet Cong platoons 15 miles south-west of Saigon, a United States light infantry brigade was dropped by air into the area and joined in the battle. The Viet Cong withdrew after a five-hour battering, leaving 11 dead, a United States spokesman said. The Air Force’s controversial Fills raided North Vietnam yesterday for the fifth consecutive day since resuming combat flying last Friday.
