Population
Sir, —The problems of overpopulation and of feeding the world are underrated. On present birth-rates, only standing room will be available by the change of the century. To feed and house this number of people would obviously be impossible. History shows that depressions and famines are the chief causes of war, yet what else are we being led into by the world birth-rate? My suggestion is to increase, decrease, or sustain population figures according to a nation's resources by an effective and legally-enforced birth-control programme. The object of any government is to protect and cater for the well-being of its people, yet no government will enforce such a birth-control programme for fear of losing office. It is high time that the people and governments of this world realised this grow-
ing problem before it reaches a climax.—Yours, etc., B. KINGSTON. April 16, 1968.
